Healthy Relationship Hack #5: On the “Same Team”

Several years ago, we were visiting friends who were going through a tough time trying to buy a house. The familiar phone call from the realtor came again while we were there. The house sold to someone else…a cash buyer at “above list” price.

Disappointed and dejected, Rick came into the living room where we were chatting with his wife. “I can’t believe it!” he fumed. “Rejected again! Why can’t someone cut us a break?!” Slumped in a nearby chair, he looked at his wife, “Why are you so picky? And take so long to make a decision? In this housing market if you don’t move fast, you don’t have a chance!”

Hurt, she looked at him, “Rick, what did we just agree on last week? When tough times come and bad things happen, we’ll remind ourselves that we’re on the same team. We’re in this together for better or worse and we love each other. If we start attacking each other, not only will the devil win by tearing us apart and destroying our marriage, but we both also lose everything we care about in the process.”

Rick looked up and said, “I’m sorry. I really thought we had this one. And I know you’re only thinking about our family and the right house that will work for us when you’re careful and want to evaluate things. This isn’t about you or us. We are on the same team. We’ve stuck together through this terrible time. I love you. Please forgive me for attacking you in my own self-pity and anger.”

We all prayed together.

I’ve often thought about their concept of being “On the Same Team.” What a terrific way to remember that when everything around us may seem to be falling apart, we must cling together. We’re rooting for each other. We’re working together to accomplish the same goals and desires.

Remember, you are always part of a team. As a believer in Jesus Christ, you are always on His team. We see King David knew this. When everyone around him turned against him we’re told, “But David felt strengthened and encouraged in the Lord his God.” (I Samuel 30:6) Whether you have another friend, or your only team member is God, turn to Him. He’s standing right there beside you, waiting to comfort and encourage you. Remember the adage, “God plus one is a majority.”
