Experience a New Year’s Revolution

Experience a New Year’s Revolution

No, that’s not a typo. That is an appropriate word signaling genuine transformation.

We all know New Year’s Resolutions last about a week or two at best. Then whammo…gone by the side of the road. But a revolution—that means a complete change!

I think we’re all fortunate our nation’s Founding Fathers didn’t settle for an American Resolution! They opted instead for a Revolution…otherwise we’d still be drinking tea and eating crumpets (whatever those are). And they all knew they’d pay dearly if our cause failed. Many of them died broke and penniless due to their decision to establish a free nation.

But what if this year could be different for YOU, brothers? What if you could ditch the resolution business and opt for genuine, successful life/business/health improving change? Not because you’re going to magically develop superhuman willpower, but because you’re going to approach it smarter.

I want to tell you about a book I came across that’s really opened a new door for my 2026: “The One Word That Will Change Your Life” by Jon Gordon. The premise is brilliantly simple—instead of making a dozen resolutions you’ll abandon, you prayerfully choose one word to guide your entire year. Ask God for your One word.

That’s it. Not a laundry list of goals. Not a five-year plan mapped out in detail. Just one powerful word that becomes your compass for the next twelve months. Gordon explains that when you focus on one word, EVERYTHING changes. It becomes a lens through which you view opportunities and reminds you of what really matters when life gets chaotic. Your word might be “health” or “courage” or  “simplicity”—whatever resonates with where you are and where you need to go.

Here’s why this works for us as men: We’re wired to focus. Give us a clear target, and we’ll hit it. But give us ten competing priorities, and we’ll spin our wheels. Let’s face it…men don’t multitask well. One word gives us that clarity we crave.

January is the perfect time for this fresh start because everyone’s talking about change anyway. The cultural momentum is there. But instead of getting swept up in the typical resolution frenzy, you’re taking a different path—a smarter path.

Think about your one word as your personal mission statement for the year. When someone asks you to take on another commitment, you can ask yourself: “Does this align with my word? When you’re faced with a tough decision: “How does the word God gave me for the year help me make this decision?” When you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed: “What are the implications of my word as it relates to this situation?”

I’m challenging you to read this book, pray, and choose your word. Don’t overthink it—God will reveal it when you give yourself space to listen. Write it down. Put it somewhere you’ll see it every day. Share it with someone who’ll hold you accountable.

This January doesn’t have to be like all the others. You don’t need a complete life overhaul. You just need one word and the commitment to let God use it to guide you. So, what’s it going to be? What’s your word?

My word is CREATE. So, send me an email at Reen@WatermanCG.com with your word…or to ask how I’m doing with mine. I’d love to hear from you!
