Need Comfort?

Talk about a rough week! This past week was a tough one. Living Your Refreshed Life doesn’t mean life will be completely pain-free and without problems. I experienced that this week.

I’d been complaining about a tooth that hurt for about 2 months. But I didn’t take time to go to the dentist. And was that a mistake!

Last weekend that dull pain escalated into excruciating pain, particularly if I drank or ate anything cold. The pain radiated along my jaw bone from my ear to the tip of my chin. The pain was so crippling that I actually had to pull off the road one time and sat for 30 minutes until I could drive again. 

I finally went to see a doctor and was told a tooth was abscessed and needed removal. But every oral surgeon in the area was either on vacation or a convention!Seriously! I think 10-14 dentists were called. I was in pain, without resources and desperate!

I realized I needed more help than any person could give me. I needed God to intervene. I prayed fervently and asked friends to pray because I had a class to teach both Tuesday at church and Wednesday at the nearby university-the first class of the fall in both cases…classes I really couldn’t cancel.

And an amazing this happened! Both times I taught, the pain miraculously subsided. I was actually pain-free for two hours each time and for several days until I could find a surgeon, the pain turned into a dull ache.

I needed comfort that no one was able to supply but God. The Holy Spirit, who comes to live within us when we believe in Jesus Christ, is described in the Bible as the Comforter. And that word means One who relieves mental distress, furnishes relief, and is to be relied on regularly as well as in an emergency.

I was in tremendous physical pain and extreme mental distress. We simply couldn’t find anyone to remove the tooth and stop the pain!

God intervened and Jesus’ Holy Spirit provided the Comfort I so desperately needed. (Later my husband found a dentist in Charleston and we went to have the tooth pulled.)

I understood again Paul’s words to the Corinthians, “ Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 

Do you need Comfort today? As a believer, the Holy Spirit is ready and waiting to be there for you in your time of distress. His Comfort is one promise that is yours everyday! It’s His promise for Your Refreshed Life!
