The 7th Key to Prospering — “Respect All People”

Happy March, everyone! Linda and I wish you a safe and happy month as we move towards spring.

The last key to biblically prospering is to “Respect All People.” I remember early in my walk with Christ, I had a certain brusqueness about me that wasn’t the most positive for business, relationships, or ministry! (I sure am glad that God was patient with me, and my loving wife has helped me improve!)

While serving as a national trainer I lived out of hotels weekly and  recall that while I noticed the people behind the front desk or the breakfast servers, I was curt and perfunctory. And certainly, I did not treat them as I would like to be treated!

One morning while reading my Bible, I felt convicted when I read John 13:34,“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” That was a much-needed wake-up call that helped me realize I was not treating others as God had treated me. No matter what a person’s job or calling is, he or she deserves to be treated as Jesus would treat them by engaging them in a friendly manner, encouraging them, and showing respect.

After this awakening, I began cheerfully engaging the front desk people, servers, and even the people cleaning the bathrooms. I thanked them for their hard work and what a difference they made in my stay. My change in attitude also opened the door for many God-appointed conversations that would not have been available with my earlier brusque demeanor.

And if you are in sales or business, never discount a single person. While a prospect may not purchase your offering, they may know someone who might. Don’t discount a person by their dress or actions as many successful people do not dress or act as their station in life and bank balance would normally merit. If you treat everyone with excellent service and respect, it will come back to you time and time again. I’ve seen it in my own life and know it is true!

Also, you never know to whom you are speaking. I love what Hebrews 13:2 Amp says, “Do not neglect to extend hospitality to strangers [especially among the family of believers—being friendly, cordial, and gracious, sharing the comforts of your home and doing your part generously], for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.
