A Much Needed Fear
The grief and disbelief was palpable on the young newswoman’s face. She stood in the New York City streets amidst the rubbish and rubble. It was the day after… the night before, rioting and looting prevailed.
She seemed most perplexed by the continued stealing even in broad daylight. She described three women driving up behind her (completely aware she was reporting and they were being filmed), who jumped out of their car, reached through the broken glass of a luxury store, and stole items…blatant crime without consequences. No fear.
As I write this I think about another fear…the fear of the Lord. What has happened to that fear? Where is that awe, respect and humility for the One who alone is to be feared, the One to whom we all must finally give account? The prophet Isaiah tells us that God “will be the sure foundation of our times…the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.”
Solomon tells us “Wisdom’s instruction is the fear of the Lord,” and sums up all his writing in the words, “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter; Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.”
Let us pray and encourage all we meet to turn to God…to seek the face of the God of the Universe in reverent fear and trust. In Him alone, can they or can we find peace. And only when His truth prevails, will justice and peace be joined on earth.
