Your Story Combats the Noise
Did you know that your story not only matters but also brings clarity to a confused world? Donald Miller writes in his book, “Building a Story Brand,” “Nobody can look away from a good story. In fact, neuro-scientists claim the average human being spends more than 30 percent of their time daydreaming…unless they’re reading, listening to, or watching a story unfold.
Why? Because when we are engaged in a story, the story does the daydreaming for us. Story is the greatest weapon we have to combat noise, because it organizes information in such a way that people are compelled to listen,” Miller concludes.
Noise fills our world right now. The noise of political hatred, civil unrest, and technological devices with their incessantly beeping notifications…noise surrounds us. But story is our answer. Focusing on the story of our lives and the lives of others melds and focuses the random into order creating a path and direction that changes everything.
Let’s talk about the greater story, God’s Story, and our story as part in it. John Eldridge writes in his book, “Epic”,
“Christianity, in it’s true form, tells us that there is an Author and that He is good, the essence of all that is good and beautiful and true, for he is the source of all these things. It tells us that he has set our hearts’ longings within us, for he has made us to live in an Epic. It warns that the truth is always in danger of being twisted and corrupted and stolen from us because there is a villain in the Story who hates our hearts and wants to destroy us. It calls us up into a Story that is truer and deeper than any other, and assures is that there we will find the meaning of our lives.”
We all seek the meaning of our lives and that meaning is hidden in our stories. So take time to look at your story. What makes it unique? What can you learn about the character of God through your story? Do you see His faithfulness, nearness, love, and care? Do you see His ability to bring about change and overcome difficulty? What can others learn about God from you and your story?
Your world needs to hear your story now. People are desperately seeking direction, hope and encouragement more than ever before and all these things are only found in Jesus Christ as His story is lived out in our lives. Tell your story. Someone’s life may depend on it.
And if you have no idea how your life is a story or how God wants you to see and know Him through the events and circumstances of your life, please write me. There is nothing I would love more than to help you discover His purpose for your life!
