7 Questions to Discovering Your Passion

Passion is a fascinating thing. It’s definition is “a strong and barely controllable emotion.” Emotions are strange, aren’t they? We all have them, yet often they are felt but unable to be defined. And passion is a very deeply personal.

Is it due to some traumatic experience you endured as a child? Some people develop non-profit organizations to provide what they were lacking as children.

Is it due to an exultant joy you felt in accomplishing something as a young adult? Some create scholarships for those who are gifted in an area they are passionate about in life.

Is it an interest that in growing over the years became all-consuming, intriguing beyond words? Some can only imagine doing one thing and nothing else, because it brings them joy.

Each of us is passionate about something.

Some recognize it and others don’t. How can you discover your passion, recognizing it as something God desires to use in fulfilling His purpose in and through your life?

Write out your answers to gain perspective as you consider these seven questions:

  1. If you possessed all the money you would ever need to provide for yourself and your family and could do anything you wanted to do in this life, what would you do?
  1. What activity brings you greatest joy?
  1. If you asked your best friend what they observe you are passionate about, what would they say?
  1. What could you talk about for hours if given the opportunity?
  1. What did you enjoy most as a child?
  1. When you picture your life in five years, what does it look like? Would you change that picture if you could and why?
  1. What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

As you reflect on these questions, allow yourself to feel passion.

Maybe it’s been a long time, but there is still a God-given passion within you. Identify it. Explore it. Consider how you might develop it.

Paul describes His life with these words, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strictness of the law of our fathers, being ardent and passionate for God just as all of you are today” (Acts22:3) and tells the Colossians, “Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men,” (Colossians 3:23 Amplified)

Finally, Jesus demonstrated passion.

We read, “Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me” (John 2:17 NLT). Pour your passion into realizing God’s will for your life and you will always be abundantly fulfilled!
