Discovering Balance Through Order

Hi! This is Reen and I’m writing this week’s blog because Linda is preparing to teach a Bible study tomorrow. I laughed when she asked me to write this week’s blog on order, part of a balanced life. When we first were married, I was the most unorganized person. Ask me to find an important document or product manual and I would shrug my shoulders and say, “Not quite sure where that is…give me some time.” And after quite a bit of time elapsed, guess what—couldn’t find it.

One of my keys for identifying whether a relationship is a positive force in someone’s life is whether the presence of someone in your life enhances or detracts from the quality of your life. Beyond a doubt, Linda has clearly enhanced mine. Over 16 years, Linda (author of a book on chaos!), has helped bring order from my chaos. Not all of her attempts to bring organization and focus into my life have succeeded…but enough of them left an indelible impression so that I now strive…as much as possible…to live a more ordered life.

It’s interesting that the Bible encourages us, “But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.” This verse brings something to mind in which Linda has really helped me. I have always been impressed with her efficient use of a day planner system. This has helped her find order, balance, and peace in her daily and weekly work. For me, it has always been a struggle. Until now.

Recently I came across a system by Mike Hyatt, called the “Full Focus Planner.” I read about this in Mike’s new book, “Your Best Year Yet.” In this book, one chapter describes his new planning system. Other systems I have tried…ad nauseum…covered a whole year, but just didn’t work for me. With Mike’s, you buy a book each quarter…and it’s a “catch all” for plans, goals, and everything. It breaks goals down into easily achievable nuggets. While I am still getting used to it, I have to admit I am a huge fan.

So, my advice…whatever system you use for organizing your closet, your finances, your week, or your life in general…stick it out. Make it work. Tame the tiger of chaos and find balance with some simple order, discipline, and hard work. You will reap the rewards of order or pay the price of chaos. Your Refreshed Life is a balanced life. Continual chaos robs the soul of peace and joy. A balanced life allows one to experience more out of life, and reduce the level of frustration that chaos creates. Try it. You’ll like it!
