How About Trying Something New?

For those who always wanted to write but never felt they could, I can never express the importance or life-changing effect a writer’s conference may have on your future. I remember as a young Mom with two under six and a new baby, my mother (also an author) invited me to attend a writer’s conference where she was judging manuscript submissions… and it happened to include a Caribbean cruise.

I remember thinking, she must be kidding, as the demands of my current life seemed overwhelming. There was no way I could take off for a week on a Caribbean cruise, I reasoned! But I really needed a break. And I was hungry to find something I could do from home to generate income while still caring for my young children. My interest in writing was a possible solution, but I knew nothing about the field or where to start. Before I knew it, my children were cared for, I was free to go, and to my surprise, the trip was confirmed!

The entire experience was more amazing than I can describe here! It was as if I walked into a new world of inspiring seminars, fascinating workshops, and interesting discussions. I encountered language and words I never heard before and they flowed like water… hook, query, and pitch. I was given a strategy for getting started! I met authors, editors, and publishers all looking for writers for magazines, newsletters, devotionals, and books. And they were able to describe exactly what they wanted!

By the end of that week my life was changed forever! I knew it was going to take a lot of work but I was determined to become a published writer and create a stream of income to support my growing family. I prepared beforehand and “pitched” a book idea to one of the top publishing houses, and the acquisitions editor wanted it! I was in shock! I stepped into this field and would never look back. And I’ve lived, loved, and worked in the Communications Field ever since!

How about you? Why not consider stepping out of your comfort zone as I did and try something you’ve always wanted to attempt? You never know what might happen. If God is in it and it is part of His plan for your life, you may discover a life you never thought possible. A promise for Jeremiah that also applies to us is found in God’s words, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,”(Jeremiah 29:11).

Trust me. It’s totally worth it!
