A&W and Technology-Free Nights

I heard something really interesting today.  A&W Root Beer, in their desire to celebrate their 100th anniversary and strengthen family communication, are recommending that families recreate the tradition of Friday Family Fun Nights as a technology-free night. For ONE hour every Friday night in the summer, families are encouraged to put their devices away, play games, read books, share stories, talk about their day and, of course, enjoy a foamy delicious A&W Root Beer float.

Their website explains, “At a time when screens increasingly demand the attention of users of all ages, A&W aims to help families across the country disconnect to reconnect…” According to a survey they commissioned, 78 percent of parents wish their families spent more time together and 84 percent believe that having regularly scheduled family time would help their families share more quality time.

“Busy schedules (60 percent) and technology distractions (41 percent) were cited as being the biggest barriers for spending quality time together,” they continued. “A&W looks to bridge that gap by eliminating the outside distractions and adding the old-fashioned fun it has been providing to families for generations.”

Memories matter. They even matter to God. He tells His people, “Remember the wonders He has done…” He even encourages them to write them down. Maybe on Family Fun Night we can all begin by remembering the great things God did for us throughout the week. Create a “Gratitude Journal” and share your family stories together. Happy Summer Fridays!
