Key Questions to Share Your Faith

Reen rushed in today after talking with a guy who came to give us a quote for our move. (Yes, we’re moving! I’ll tell you more in next week’s blog.)  Reen was elated at what God allowed him to do. Here is his story…

How often do we simply “talk at” people instead of intentionally engaging in a spiritual dialogue? People hunger for answers to their deep spiritual questions. French theologian Louis Pascal wrote, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.” And despite this deep, underlying hunger…you may be the only “church” they ever come near.

Recently, I spent an hour with a man who came to give us a moving quote. He was captivated by all our books, so I took this cue to ask him about reading books. He said he wanted to, but always seemed to fall asleep. I suggested he check out audio books on Audible.com, so he could enjoy books without falling asleep.

Then, I asked him if he ever read the Bible. This led to a discussion about his life, and his pain over the loss of his father and sister. He said he had walked away from church and God, but lately had been having serious questions about his own mortality.

I was able to share my journey to discovering a close personal relationship with God. I asked, “Would it be okay if I asked you the same question that changed my whole world?” He said, “Sure.”

“If you were to die today,” I asked, “on a scale of 1-100, how sure are you that God would let you into Heaven?” He said he thought he was a pretty good guy, tried to help people, that there were people much worse than him, and that he thought he was 65% sure of getting into Heaven.

I asked him if he wanted to be 100% certain he would get into heaven. He jumped at this as something he wanted. I shared the simplified plan that God set in place to reconcile the world to Himself and explained how now I had perfect peace. I asked him if he wanted to have this same peace. I then led him in a simple prayer where he acknowledged his sin against God and received Jesus Christ’s death as payment for his sin, securing a relationship with God and the guarantee of eternity spent in Heaven. I explained what this meant. I also told him I would get him an easy Bible to read and a reading plan.

By paying attention and looking for cues to something that interested him, I was able to guide the conversation into a spiritual discussion, learn his story, pull some details from my story that resonated with him, and finally bring God’s plan to the forefront. Then, I concluded with the offer to receive the peace he so desperately wanted.

Whether we recognize it or not, we are surrounded every day with people who are hungry to learn about our God. They are desperate for stability in intensely uncertain times. They want to know where they will be when their life comes to a close. If you know this God, take time to consider how you might tell your story. The book recommended in this newsletter might give you both the encouragement and knowledge you need to step out and lead someone to know God.
