Identity Crisis
When men meet, the first question they ask each other is, “What do you do?” This shows how deeply our work is ingrained into our sense of self-worth. But there are two serious flaws with a work-based identity. The first problem is that as Christians, our identity is first in Jesus Christ. We are sons of God. The apostle Paul displays this understanding of his true “self” as he identifies himself in Romans 1:1 as “a bond-servant of Christ,” not what he does for a living. It is so essential to understand that our true eternal value and importance is based on WHO we belong to and NOT WHAT we do. We need look no further than the cross on Calvary for proof that we matter to God. And what can be more important than that fact?
The second problem with a work-based identity is that if your personal estimation of value is solely based on what you do for a living, you lose all sense of meaning and purpose when you lose your job or your career. This is most tragically demonstrated by the Stock Market crash of 1929 that set off the Great Depression, when countless men who lost careers, incomes, and futures jumped off skyscrapers!
In these challenging times when so many people are out of work or seeking a career change (a phenomenon called “the Great Resignation”), it’s time to solve this identity crisis. The key to doing this is to deepen your faith and begin to fully comprehend God’s phenomenal love for you. Recognize that God has a plan for your life– no matter what your work situation happens to be. I have endured—and spiritually prospered—through an extended season of career transition by clinging doggedly to this truth. No matter where you are in life, your eternal identity is rooted in Christ.
So, spend time with God in prayer, get back to reading your Bible (you can locate numerous Bible reading plans online to make this an effortless process), and join a men’s group.
