3 A.M. Worship Service
Like oil exploding to the surface as a new oil rig strikes oil underground, whenever I get ready to write my column, words burst forth in my mind and onto the page. This process still amazes me. My wife says it’s the real joy of writing, hearing from God and sharing it with others. I hope these words encourage you!
An interesting thing has been happening to me. In the past, when I couldn’t sleep and would toss and turn around 3 a.m., I would get frustrated with myself, with Satan for attacking me, or …even with God for not letting me sleep. Over the years God reworked my thoughts about this and now when I awaken from sleeping and can’t return to “blissful unconsciousness,” I’m reminded of 1 Samuel 3:9, “Speak, God. I’m your servant, ready to listen.”
Recently when awakening at 3 a.m., instead of praying for my needs I find myself quietly breaking into spontaneous worship of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This can last for thirty minutes or more (I don’t share this pridefully but just as a matter of fact). I’ve come to believe this is the authentic work of the Holy Spirit in my life.
It is quite a refreshing, exciting thing. Especially since in the past when I woke up like this, I might remember war movies or westerns I’ve watched. But now, instead, I come before the throne of God with worship, honor, praise, and heartfelt and genuine love-filled thanksgiving to the Holy Trinity.
And yes, in time I do go back to sleep. But I must recommend this to you. When you can’t sleep…when you’re stuck in traffic…when you can’t find anything to attract your mind…consider tuning out everything else and come before God to worship. If you are alone, sing. If you can’t carry a tune, well, sing anyway. If you are in a group setting somewhere…do it silently. Just try it and experience the added dimension it brings to your walk with Christ!!
